Get in touch with your spiritual side as we explore three works by American composers influenced by different forms of the sacred. Copland’s Appalachian Spring takes a traditional Shaker hymn, “Simple Gifts,” and paints majestic strokes to evoke a traditional simplicity of American rural life.
Theofanidis was inspired to compose Lighting, with Life… by several anonymous American Indian poems with a common thread of a supernatural sense of nature, and he was deeply influenced by September 11th occurred as he was writing the piece. We are excited for Music Director Jacob Sustaita to take a break from the podium to perform as the featured viola soloist for this piece.
Finally, Still’s Afro-American Symphony combines the symphonic form with blues progressions and rhythms as well as with African American spirituals.

Take a grand orchestral tour with us through some of the biggest and best natural wonders of the world. We’ll begin by meandering down one of Bohemia’s greatest rivers, the Vltava, with one of Smetana’s most famous works, Die Moldau.
Next, we’ll explore naturalist Aldo Leopold’s idea that only a mountain has lived long enough to “listen objectively to the howl of a wolf”. We welcome local actor Bradley Greenwald as he narrates Leopold’s essay “Thinking Like a Mountain” set to Victoria Bond’s score, encouraging us to contemplate the interconnectedness of nature.
We’ll continue with the mysteriousness of Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, commonly known as “Fingal’s Cave” which evokes the wilds of the Scottish coast. Finally, we’ll end a bit closer to home at one of the biggest natural wonders of all with Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite.
