As the first concert with a new music director, the theme for this is self-explanatory: everything changes. The program was selected to emphasize the breadth of colors and sensitivity the orchestra can offer, by emphasizing radical changes in ensemble between pieces: from the large, full orchestra of the title piece by Erika Foin (which is enjoying its local premiere), to the early-Romantic sensibility of Mendelssohn’s string Sinfonia in E minor, to the colorful wind symphony by blind composer Joaquin Rodrigo. Yet not quite everything changes–we again welcome openly gay soloist Andrew Sords as he returns to perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, emphasizing the role of the orchestra as an accompaniment vehicle for solo works, with the MPO.
This activity is funded, in part, by appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State’s general fund, and its Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created by a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.
